WHEN THE ROCK LOSES ITS FOOTING

The Swiss Alps are under strain. Global warming is transforming the mountains: the permafrost is thawing, slopes are cracking, and entire sections of rock are breaking away. On the ground, these phenomena result in rockfalls, landslides, mudslides and blocked access routes. Villages, roads and water infrastructure find themselves at the mercy of a natural world that is changing faster than ever before. This series of images bears witness to these vulnerable places. These are not isolated disasters, but visible signs of a world in transition. Understanding, documenting, preventing: three essential steps towards living better with a mountain landscape that, too, is seeking a new equilibrium.
